5th grade GOAL Class Mrs. Liverett's 5th grade GOAL class participated in a creative problem solving activity as a culminating project to their discussion of hurricanes. In this CPS activity, students had to work in teams pretending they were engineers hired to create a Hurricane Warning device. They were given 12 inches of aluminum foil, 1 balloon, 1 pipe cleaner, 1 plastic bag, and 10 mailing labels. After creating their devices, groups had to prepare a presentation to the National Weather Service explaining how the device worked, and how it could warn people of impending weather better than any warning system currently used. Ashanti Jordan enjoyed the presentation the most. She said, "I like showing how the device works." Byran Cordoba, of the boys' team, said the design part was the best because he enjoys being the leader.

PTO/Open House Night at Maddox The faculty and staff of Maddox welcomed parents into the school for our annual PTO/Open House Night. This year, the parents were entertained by one of Mrs. Austin's 3rd grade music classes. The children played instruments along with the last movement of the "William Tell Overture" written by Gioachino Rossini. The students did an amazing job and learned a lot about the composer.
