
The Laurel Speech and Debate Team has been busy this fall with tournaments back to back. After hosting a tournament at their school recently, they competed the following weekend in the Oak Grove Speech and Debate Tournament with sixteen other schools.
Verneshia Heidelberg won first place in Novice Poetry and third place in Novice interpretation. Rebecca Pittman won 2nd place in Storytelling and seventh place in oratory. Melvin Richardson won 3rd place in Storytelling, while he and his partner Sierra Byrd were 5th in Duo Interpretation. Carl McInnis was a semi finalist in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate.
Semifinalists included Sasha Carpenter in Dramatic Interpretation; Carl McInnis is Impromptu Speaking, Hannah Pittman in Storytelling, Gabrielle McCarthy and Corbin McDavitt in Novice Interpretation, and Sierra Byrd in Varsity Prose.
At the St. Andrew’s Tournament just before hosting their tournament the team placed the following students. Verneshia Heidelberg won 1st place in Novice Poetry and 3rd Place in Novice Prose. Sasha Carpenter was 6th Place in Dramatic Interpretation, while Corbin McDavitt was 6th Place in Novice Interpretation. Melvin Richardson was 4th in Storytelling. Semifinalists included Delta Evans and Josh Agee in Expository Speaking, Julie Mauldin in Novice Poetry, Gabrielle McCarthy in Novice Interpretation, Sarah Robinson in Storytelling, and partners Julie Mauldin and Sarah Robinson in Dupo Interpretation.
