The third, fourth and fifth graders at Oak Park Elementary School recently learned about the various characteristics of soil. Ralph Thornton, a USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service soil resource scientist for south Mississippi, shared examples of soils and fossils with the students. Thornton, who serves 34 counties in Mississippi, had an extensive fossil collection which included sharks teeth and a whale vertebra found in Mississippi.
