Kay Thomas Visits Nora Davis Magnet School
Ms. Brownlee's 4th grade enjoyed a fabulous experience on Thursday,
November 4, 2010. Our class is studying figurative language and our focus this week is hyperbole which is simply exaggeration. On Thursday our Kay Thomas visited and presented an arts integrated lesson on exaggeration. All fourth and fifth grade teachers were able to observe her in her element, interacting with the students at Nora Davis. The students created a portrait of exaggeration with only paper, glue, and scissors. The students learned about different artists and art terminology such as profile, portrait, and proportion. She showed them examples of abstract portraits and realistic portraits as well as specific examples of artwork. The students will continue with an extension of this lesson by naming their character, writing similes, metaphors, and hyperboles, writing a poem and various other activities including a monologue introducing their character during the poetry unit. This was a wonderful experience and was very much enjoyed by the students and teachers.
