8th grade students at Laurel Middle School are diving into research in English class. This year the students are researching the career they would like to pursue after completion of high school. Students have to research the nature of work, training/qualifications, earnings, and the job outlook.

Many professionals in the area may receive a call or a visit from an 8th grade student. As a requirement, students have to interview someone in the profession that they selected.

"Interviewing someone in the profession that I chose will allow me to get more information from someone who is experienced," stated Maurice Brown, an 8th grader.

"Implementing this research paper in 8th grade is great because they are able to grasp the MLA format before they enter high school", stated Marquita McCullum, an 8th grade English teacher. "We want students to step into Laurel High School prepared to tackle the more complex objectives and tasks required at the secondary level."

Laurel School District's Board Policy requires every 8th grade student to complete a research paper.
