MISSION STATEMENT

The Laurel School District media services endeavors to support both faculty and students by providing access to a broad spectrum of materials as an integral part of a dynamic and diverse education.

PHILOSOPHY

It is the philosophy of the Laurel School District that the library media center should be a student centered environment that is accessible to individuals, small groups, and whole classes for research and enjoyment. The library media specialist will be available to plan cooperatively with faculty, to integrate information skills into all areas of curriculum, and to assist in the selection of appropriate materials to enhance instruction and promote leisure reading.

PURPOSE

This page is meant to provide teachers, students, and parents of Laurel Middle School information that can be utilized as learning resources.

HOURS OF OPERATION

The Laurel Middle School library operates on a flexible schedule and is open Monday-Friday from 7:45 A.M. to 3:15 P. M. During Extended School Days the library will remain open until 4:25. Students may check out books before and after school, between classes and break times. During the school day, a student may come to the library if they have a library pass from their teacher. The library is also available at these times for reference work, if needed. Many new library books have been purchased for our Accelerated Reading Program.

CIRCULATION POLICIES

All students in the school are encouraged to use the library and to check out books. Reference books, such as encyclopedias and dictionaries are to be used in the library. Magazines, newspapers and vertical file material may not be taken from the library without special permission. If permission is granted, they may be checked out to carry to class for reports and returned at the end of the period.
It is important that all library materials be returned when due. A book may be checked out for two weeks and rechecked as needed. No fine is charged, but students must pay the current price of books that are lost or damaged beyond reasonable wear. Students are allowed to check out two (2) books at a time. Any student who checks out a book is responsible for that book until it is again in the hands of the media specialist. Students cannot check out books or materials for other students.

COMPUTERS

Computers are available for student use in the library for educational purposes only. Each student and faculty member must sign an Acceptable Internet Use Policy. The Policy is available in the Principal's office as well as in the Parent and Student Handbook.
