Board names finalists, schedules public interviews for superintendent search

Following the review of 22 applications received for the position of Laurel School District superintendent, the Board of Trustees has narrowed the applicants to eight finalists, with seven to be interviewed. Board President Miranda Beard said the interview schedule is set, and all interviews will be open to the public.

Individuals may submit questions by noon Tuesday, Nov. 14 for consideration. Beard said that due to the interview time frame, those who attend the open interviews will not be allowed to ask questions. The board will review the submitted questions and choose those most appropriate. All submitted questions must include name and address. Anonymous questions will not be accepted.

“We want public involvement by allowing citizens to submit questions, and listen to the interview process,” Beard said. “Each candidate is given approximately 45 minutes, and it would take too long to allow everyone in attendance to speak. Those in attendance may sit in and listen, but will not be allowed to ask questions during the interviews. All questions must be submitted.”

“There are specific questions that the board must have these candidates address so we can find the individual who we believe can fulfill the needs of the Laurel School District,” Beard continued. “The seven candidates are strong contenders. The board hopes to announce a superintendent or an interim superintendent in December.”

The Interviews will be held at the Gardiner Administrative Building, which is located at 303 West 8th Street, Laurel. Interview questions should be emailed by noon on Tuesday, Nov. 14 to lwalters@laurelschools.org. Emails must include the name and address of person submitting the questions.

Among the applicants were seven principals, four curriculum directors, four assistant superintendents and seven former superintendents, with applications received from residents of Mississippi, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. Originally, the board selected eight candidates, and one has withdrawn, bringing the number of candidates to be interviewed to seven.
