Dear Laurel School District Families and Community,
The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community remain our highest priority. In light of the recent tragedies that have occurred at Homecoming celebrations across our state, we have been reminded in the most heartbreaking way that lives are far more valuable than any tradition or event.
After careful consideration and in consultation with law enforcement and district leadership, the Laurel School District has made the difficult decision to suspend all tailgating activities (including on District leased property across from fieldhouse) until further notice, and cancel the annual Homecoming Street Jam out of an abundance of caution.
We know that Homecoming is a time of pride, celebration, and togetherness. However, we must always put safety first. All other Homecoming events, including the coronation, student dance, musical, parade, and football game, will continue as planned with enhanced security measures in place. We are working closely with the Laurel Police Department and our School Resource Officers to offer a safe and orderly environment for everyone in attendance.
These decisions are never easy, but they are made with love and responsibility for our Laurel family. Our goal is to preserve the joy and unity that define the spirit of the Golden Tornadoes, while ensuring that every student and family member feels secure.
Our hearts go out to the communities of Heidelberg, Leland, and others across Mississippi who are grieving unimaginable losses following their Homecoming events. We stand with them in compassion and solidarity.
Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and continued support of our students and schools, as we remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting those we serve.
With respect and gratitude,
Dr. Michael J. Eubanks
Superintendent
Laurel School District
